Besides driving my child to camp, are there other methods of transportation?
Parents have the option of either dropping their kids off at camp or taking advantage of one of our charter buses. We strongly encourage families to use our bus system for many convenience reasons but mainly because it helps campers get oriented with other campers and staff before actually arriving at camp. Becoming acquainted with other campers early helps to reduce any separation anxiety individual campers may experience. [Back to top]

What kinds of qualifications/training do your camp counselors have?
All counselors have passed a written evaluation as well as a lengthy interview process.  In addition, extensive background checks are done on all employees. Counselors attend an intensive week-long training that includes first aid and CPR certification, child psychology and counselor conduct seminars, conflict resolution strategies, situational role playing exercises and introductions to the newest games and activities. Our counselors are over 18-years old and have demonstrated a sincere interest in the development of children. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
Will my child get homesick?
This question is probably the most frequently asked question we receive. Of course, the answer is different for every camper. Some campers may not experience homesickness, but many campers will. However, we have trained staff, including "camp moms," to help alleviate any homesickness which may occur. We have found that children may take as many as a few days to become acclimated to camp and sleeping away from home. The two-week sessions therefore offer any child who may be prone to feeling homesick a more enriched camp experience because it allows them ample time to become acquainted with other campers and the camp life. Q:
A:
Is a laundry service provided?
For campers enrolled in sessions 2-5, laundry will be done once in the middle of the session. This service will not be provided for session 1. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
What should my child bring to camp?
A detailed list of what items each camper will need to bring will be sent home to every family as part of the "parent kit" before the start of the enrolled session. Examples of what will be on the list are: a sleeping bag, a twin fitted sheet, shorts, t-shirts, toiletries, a warm sweatshirt or sweater, long pants, shower shoes, closed-toed shoes, self-addressed postcards or envelopes, hat, sunscreen, etc. Examples of items not allowed at camp include electronics (i.e., GameBoy, Walkman, etc.) and money. Q:
A:
What is the "camp store" and how will my son/daughter purchase items?
The camp store is open to campers to purchase items such as extra toiletries, sodas, candy, t-shirts, etc. Since we do not allow money to be brought to camp, a designated amount of money will be pre-authorized to a parent's credit card from which the camper will have access via their own "Canyon Creek Credit Card." Q:
A:
Can I visit my child at camp?
We encourage independence and offer a strong camp community. For these reasons and more, we do not allow parent visits unless a child is enrolled in more than one consecutive session. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
How can I communicate with my child at camp?
We strongly encourage frequent letter writing as the best way of communication. Camp Directors and staff may act as liaisons between campers and parents but due to telephone restrictions, we can not allow campers to make phone calls. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
What if my child routinely takes prescription medication?
All medications being brought to camp will be locked in our infirmary. Any child who routinely takes medication will do so with the assistance of the camp nurse as often as necessary. Prior to arriving at camp, all families will receive a "Health Questionnaire" to fill out and return. Any medications being sent with campers to camp will need to be documented on this questionnaire. All medications must be sent to camp in a pharmacy labeled original container. Once camp is in session, changes in dosage or medication will need to be made in writing and sent to Canyon Creek by a physician. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
What if my child gets sick or injured at camp?
We have registered nurses on duty 24 hours per day. If a camper requires further medical attention, we have doctors on-call from Castaic and from Lancaster. Parents (and family physician) will be notified if a doctor's attention is necessary. In the case of an extreme emergency, we are very fortunate to have air-flight capabilities on-grounds which can be at Canyon Creek Sports Camp within minutes. In addition, the fire station and paramedics are located 6 miles up Lake Hughes Road. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
What kind of food do you offer?
A: We are extra sensitive to healthy food selections. Each meal will be accompanied by a salad bar and/or fruit bar. Our food service staff plans balanced, nutritious meals that will help campers maintain the necessary levels of energy for the days' activities. [Back to top]
Q:
A:
How will my child be grouped in a cabin?
Our cabin grouping is based on parents' original Registration Form requests of a "friend to be grouped with". Granted that the requested camper is within one year and/or grade of your child, the campers will be housed together. All requests must be mutual. [Back to top]
